What would Y&R be without our favorite damsel in distress?
Whether you love or hate the character of Sharon Newman,
there is one thing we can all agree on: she always has people talking.
Sharon Newman is probably one of daytime’s most talked about
characters. On one side you have her loyal fans who defend and love her to a
fault no matter what she does, and on the other side, you have a bunch of
people yelling (or rolling their eyes) at their TV’s over her latest crime or
scandal - and Sharon is definitely no angel
Let’s refresh our memory on some of Sharon’s less than
shining moments. In no particular order and to name just a few, we have:
- Sharon still in love with Adam after she found out he lied about Faith’s death and kidnapping
- Sharon’s multiple marriages and affairs (She slept with all the Newman and Abbott men, also married half of them, and then some
- Who’s the daddy storyline? Nick/Jack/Billy (I still say Faith is Jack’s baby and not Nick’s)
- Sharon chloroformed a guard and escaped from prison
- Did I already mention her marriages, affairs, and re-marriages?
- Sharon burned down Victor’s house
- Sharon’s crazy, stealing, kleptomania phase
- Married and bedded her ex-father in law, Victor Newman (who still needs a barf bag?)
- Burned her prenup with Victor and somehow gained control of Victor’s company while he went missing (How she did this is still a mystery to me)
- Sharon and Summer’s paternity test
Sharon Newman’s latest crime was switching Summer’s paternity
test to say Jack is the father and not Nick (Where’s Maury when you need him?).
I was initially interested in this storyline, but it has been dragged out for
way too long. It has been almost a year since Michelle Stafford has left as Phyllis
Newman, in which the paternity storyline has pretty much stayed comatose (no
pun intended). Perhaps now that Michelle Stafford has joined General Hospital as Nina Clay they’ll continue with the paternity story as
soon as Y&R hires a new Phyllis.
And it’s about time too.
We’re tired of hearing Summer whine about not knowing who
she is anymore. We’re tired of Victor and Jack feuding over Summer while she’s caught
in the middle. Poor Jack is going to be devastated when the paternity news hits
the fan; the longer it takes the worse the blow will be.
Or – Y&R doesn’t need a new Phyllis. This storyline can
easily be wrapped up by Summer having some sort of accident and needing blood
from Jack. It will then be revealed that Jack’s blood doesn’t match and hence
the plot thickens…
However this paternity story ends, I’ll be curious to see
Nick’s reaction. He has always been Sharon’s knight in shining armor and has
always had a soft spot where Sharon is concerned. When, not if, but when, he
finds out Sharon tampered with the DNA results, will he be able to forgive her
one more time? What else could Sharon possibly do that she hasn’t already to
make her even crazier?
